In this work from 1927, Artur Szyk painted a scribe in the old European style but in the top right corner 9 9 BIOGRAPHY
he added a modern painting, as if trying to demonstrate that he is capable of doing so as well. The
airplane over a picturesque landscape of a town, as well as the banknote held by angels suggest that he
was not copying the old masters but rather employing old techniques in order to talk about the modern
world.
