Przeczytałem rozporządzenie zmieniające żydowskie żółte łaty na żółte
dziesięciocentymetrowe Magendawidy na prawej piersi i prawej łopatce.
                             Barbarzyństwo postępuje naprzód.

                                  – Dawid Sierakowiak –

I read the ordinance changing the Jewish yellow patches to the yellow, ten-
-centimetre, Magen David on the right breast and the right shoulder blade.
                                 The barbarity progresses.

                                  – Dawid Sierakowiak –

The first plans to isolate the Łódź Jews had already been formulated by
December 1939. Finally, the plan to establish a ghetto in Łódź was laid out
on 8 February 1940, by order of the President of Police, Johannes Schaefer
and published in “Lodzer Zeitung”, the most prominent daily newspaper in
Łódź. The resettlement to the “residential district for Jews”, as the ghetto was
called, began immediately and lasted until the beginning of March 1940.
It reached its culmination on the so-called “Bloody Thursday” on 7 March,
when the Germans murdered several hundred people who resisted during
the forced resettlement to the ghetto.
On 30 April 1940, the ghetto, which by then had been surrounded by
a fence made of wooden planks and barbed wire, was sealed off from the
rest of the city. From that moment, anyone who tried to cross the border ille-
gally could be shot. Over one hundred and sixty-three thousand people were
squeezed into an area of 4 square kilometres.
