Fragmenty pamięci Fragments of memory

The Survivors’ Park in Łódź symbolises life and remembrance.
It was created in 2004 as a part of the commemoration
of the 60th anniversary of the Litzmannstadt Ghetto
Liquidation organised by the City of Łódź. It was born out
of an idea by Halina Elczewska, a survivor of the Łódź Ghetto,
to honour not only the victims of the Holocaust but also
to contribute to the memory of those who survived
the Holocaust and were associated with Łódź.

More memorial trees are added to the Survivors’ Park
every year; there are already more than 650 of them.
They symbolise people who were thrown by their post-war fate
into various parts of Poland and the world. A certificate in the name
of a Survivor is issued by the Mayor of Łódź. The Marek Edelman
Dialogue Center collects information about the families
of Survivors and tries to stay in touch with them, organises
meetings, publishes books and prepares exhibitions.

Fragments of Memory is the fourth exhibition presenting
the stories of the people who have their trees in the Survivors’ Park.
Each tree is yet another story that begins in Łódź. Ahead as you read,
there are stories of Survivors that also happen to be stories of love
that have survived the most difficult years.
